Gotta love DRM that makes paid versions of games worse than pirated stuff.

GOG and itch.io say hello. Add in Steam and Epic with how DRM is not mandatory.

Even Amazon of all companies lets you purchase DRM free mp3s. They even give away DRM free games that are still being sold by publishers. Same with epic. These publishers are choosing to have legal DRM free versions floating around.

You seem to be trying really hard to depict this DRM thing as something that is so essential and needed when a legal market already exists of DRM free copies with money being exchanged. Some companies like Capcom even launched with denuvo then just removed it a few months in because of the issues it was causing, and the game didn’t end up a financial disaster despite that.

I’m really confused by your statement

No, you can’t have mandatory payment for DRM-free media.

Are you by chance a console only gamer so unfamiliar with platforms like GOG that only allow DRM free games, and never bought DRM free media? I don’t think most music digital platforms even offer DRM music sales. So I guess this means you never bought digital music either? That part actually isn’t surprising, since streaming has really taken off.
