Please make sure you have “undetermined” selected in your list of spoken languages in your lemmy settings in addition to any other languages you speak.
Most lemmy content does not come through with a language tag, and you need to have undermined selected as an option to see that content.
A “gotcha” I just discovered: even though the selector uses radio buttons (which usually means you can only choose one), this is a multi-select list. So if you don’t also choose English (and/or other languages you understand), you’ll miss content that does have a language tag.
Designing UI ain’t easy.
This was my issue! I thought I could only pick one. Now I have both undetermined and english and I can see posts! Hooray!
I really hope this ‘issue’ gets clarified/fixed at a higher level at some point, because it do be a little confusing :)
Yeah. They need to include it by default, but let people turn it off.
They also need to let people choose a default language for their posts so that more of them actually have language tags.
They’ll get there eventually
Indeed, but I’m sure that with the current influx there will be much more focus on usability issues like this. Gotta take away the small bumps.
This seems dumb, but I am having the inverse issue on some communities. I can see undetermined languages fine, but English comments or posts aren’t showing up for me even with both selected, any ideas from anyone. I had to have picked something wrong but I’m not sure
Mods can set languages per community to, so it’s possible that the communities in question haven’t configured their languages correctly?
Ok ty, I’ll let them know when I see it. Ty for bearing with me since sinny new to Lemmy :D
🤦 I read this post yesterday then promptly forgot about it and proceeded to unmark “undetermined” in my language settings only to wonder today why I was missing a ton of replies on posts…
…at least I’ve fixed it now 😅
I don’t know if it’s working for me or not. But i sure hope so. How can you check if it’s done right.
Test reply with no language settings
You’ll know if it’s not done right because you’ll see a post that says it has 5 replies or something, but then when you open it, you can’t see (m)any replies
I’ll also make another reply to this without using a language tag. If you can see that, your settings are correct
Thank you so much for ur support :3
I couldn’t find this post unless I searched for the specific URL, and on top of that, I can’t see most of the comments, and it looks like it only has 16 upvotes, even though I know it has like 87. There are many posts that aren’t federating properly.
This one wouldn’t federate to you properly. It’s a group specifically for members of Blåhaj Lemmy, so you’re very possibly the first person on your instance too try and find it.
As such, votes and replies won’t be correctly visible, because they don’t backdate completely
Also, could you describe the current behavior as you understand it? When do posts/comments get federated? Like, what triggers it and how many/how far back in time will posts be shared? Is it a bandwidth or harddrive space compromise? Thanks in advance.
So, posts get federated when someone is subscribed to the group in question, but not before then. If you’re the first person on your instance to subscribe to a group, then you won’t see content from before then. It’s designed that way, because sending the entire community history every time a new instance pops up isn’t sustainable.
So, new or newer instances will not be able to view old posts and comments from established instances? Wouldn’t this behavior discourage new instances from forming as the bedrock of content grows? This behavior suggests I should make my account on the oldest and largest instance I can find, rather than branch out to smaller, newer instances. Is that what you would recommend to new users?
So, new or newer instances will not be able to view old posts and comments from established instances?
They can, they just have to search for it manually. So if you see content on a group that your instance isn’t aware of for some reason, if you copy and paste the URL in to the search box of your instance, it will pull the post across for you to interact with.
Wouldn’t this behavior discourage new instances from forming as the bedrock of content grows?
Not really. Aside from the fact that things like mailing lists remain useful even without easy access to their archived content, there are a few mitigating factors as well
Firstly, as I mentioned above, you can manually pull content across.
Secondly, if someone who can see the old thread replies to it, then that will force it to federate to your instance, as long as someone on your instance is subscribed to the group.
Is this desired behavior, or a edge case functionality that will be patched in the future? Do you know the intent of the devs on this point?
And it’s not limited to this community. I’ve seen issues with many other instances.
is it possible to set multiple languages? i can only select one…
Hold down control while clicking
ohh thx
I have undetermined and english selected but I have a post where it says there are 3 replies but I only see 2. Does this definitively mean someone has commented with another language selected? Or could it be someone commented and deleted their reply or something else?
Yeah, it could be any one of those things. You’ll know if it’s language though, because there will be lots of posts missing
I’m having an issue where I seemingly can’t add languages to my profile, not sure how to make that work?
We’ve just upgraded the server. Try again now
yee! it works now. there’s an actual warning about unselecting undetermined, and i select or unselect any languages.
I have seen some other instances where the undetermined_language_warning field has some explanatory text. Maybe there is a variable somewhere that can be configured?
For example, on Beehaw:
It will be fixed when we update the version we’re running (which will be soon)
Hello friends, I am new here👋
I’ve noticed that some posts on other instances don’t seem to be retrieving comments. I’m not sure if it’s related to the language issue, though, as I do have both undetermined and english selected in settings. Or maybe it’s just due to servers being slammed b/c of user influx.
A couple of examples (both coffee because that’s just a current hyperfixation)
- https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/245274 (0 comments)
- https://lemmy.ml/post/1385207 (13 comments)
and

- https://lemmy.world/post/386519 (1 comment)
I tried logging out and checking the links on blahaj, same result, and I checked some of the instance lists and it doesn’t seem like a defederation thing.
edit Here’s another one at lemmy.world, in this case I replied to the post and then OP replied back to me. Their original post is visible on blahaj but the reply is not, so presumably it can’t be related to that individual user.

edit Okay, so if I take the URL of the comment and search that URL from within blahaj, that makes it appear. Obviously that only helps if I know the comments exists in the first place though.
edit There are also some whole posts that don’t show up without searching the post individually
It’s likely because of instances being slammed along with Lemmy only having, like, a 10 second window where things federate before starting to time out. There are fixes that seem to be in the pipeline but I have no clue when they’ll be released. And if they’ll even fix the problems. And what will happen to all the old un-federated activities afterwards.
Is there any hope for getting old un-federated activities distribuited? This is a major issue on the platform.
Thanks, that makes sense. It would be nice if there was at least a way to prompt the server to refresh comments on a particular post or community.
(I did figure out that you can force it to see a particular comment by searching the URL of that specific comment, which is useful in cases where there’s something particular you want to reply to and you already know that it exists.)
That’s goofy, considering that the stock warning tells you you’ll see fewer replies unless you select a language
Undetermined is a language on the list. So you need to pick your languages and undetermined
Yeah, but we can’t possibly think that’s the best we can do in terms of user experience, right? :-)
Not even slightly. Lemmy is not even at version 1 yet, and that’s what it looks like
