Keep those frackin’ toasters outta here!
Keep those frackin’ toasters outta here!
You did, and your difficulty underscores my overall point. To get a good enough keyboard/mouse experience, you have to add enough hardware to the iPad that you’re at near parity with a small laptop anyway. At that point is it worth making a large sacrifice in user experience from limited functionality apps and lack of compatibility outside the Apple ecosystem to make it worth it?
Is just a better full blown laptop a better fit? Even an M1 Air has a better keyboard, great battery, and is close to the size/weight of an iPad with a great addon keyboard/trackpad.
I think everyone has seen, or at least hear of this apple add, where a kid with an iPad asks “what’s a computer”.
I had not seen that add before. What was shocking to me was 22 seconds in they show a dystopian scene where the kid is sitting in the easy chair on the sidewalk computing surrounded by the contents of someone’s home where they were evicted while breezy jazzy music plays in over the scene.
That’s dark, Apple. Very dark.
Why Apple, did I have to upload my pictures to Facebook, download them on my iPad before I could send them to people when my Phone was right there
The walled garden means you only benefit when you stay in the garden.
I am in love with the idea of the iPad for a small form factor travel machine. And it is perfect for that work load.
I’m glad this worked out for you, but my experience is a real keyboard and at least a trackpad is a necessity for my productivity. The best clip on keyboards I’ve seen for ipads come close, but at that price, and weight, I’d rather have a proper ultralight PC with Windows and Linux dual booting. That you reverted back to a PC when you got home speaks to iPad still lacking functionality you desire. I’m sorry your current laptop is bad. I hope you can get a better one which solves all the problems.
I appreciate you doing this experiment and sharing the results though. Thank you for that.

You could accomplish what you’re trying by putting the GPU in a second computer. Further, most UPSes have a data interface, so that you could have the GPU computer plugged into the UPS too, but receive the signal when power is out, so it can save its work and shutdown quickly preserving power in the UPS batteries. The only concern there would be the max current output of the UPS in the event of a power outage being able to power both computers for a short time.
Stay by the phone always. We may need you to defuse a bomb someday.
Well, my mother has asked me to digitize her collection too and have me host it. Originally, fine, you give your movies to me, I host them, same thing.
Did your mom buy your computer and hard drives? I doubt it. You spent your own money, right? So she’s giving you a whole bunch of stuff which is consuming your space. Quote out the cost of buying components for a separate server for her with her own drives. When she buys the parts, build her her own server and put her stuff on it.
While thats an awesome pile of storage, I weep for your electricity bill.
You need to make sure you always use the “+consent” flag. Never move forward without it.

Thats some major street cred for XFCE:
XFCE - we’re so minimalist you don’t even know we had a logo.
In fairness, I only recognized it because xubuntu (XFCE based Ubuntu) uses the mouse themed logo.
Your initial response of “both” was both wholesome and a unifying (no DE pun intended) statement of inclusion and acceptance.
Your followup was exclusionary and dismissive.
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie. (but I didn’t downvote you for it, I just though this was funny)
There’s three in that picture. XFCE is the one in back.

If indeed the service is provided by “Radio Link Internet” as listed in your screenshot, the owner can likely fix the speed to “better” with a single phone call RIGHT NOW with the $30 more per month subscription fee to the $85 30mbps down / 10mbps up instead of what they’re probably on the $55 service plan.
Judging from the info on your screenshot this looks like this is a WISP. Meaning if you go outside the building there is likely a small tower with an antenna on it that is aimed parallel to the ground. In the days of ISDN, these were amazingly better. In the days of fiber or even Starlink these are pretty abysmal.
Pong for me too but on a Sears Sports Center pong console:

Everyone else posting about Atari 2600, C-64, and NES. I think you may also win the thread on the only still supported platform with PDP 11 support extended to the year 2050.
Yeah, I eluded to that in my post but didn’t dive in. I think this is going to be worse for Musk and Tesla. There are all kinds of taxation and corporate liability protections in Delaware that don’t exist in Texas. There are possibly teams of lawyers salivating over this incorporation change going into place opening up new and previously unavailable avenues to attack Tesla under Texas law, or rather without Delaware protections.
Why are all gym memberships like this? The first thing I check before starting a service is how easy it is to end it. I’ve not been able to find a single gym with reasonable terms.
I do the same. So many gyms have abusive terms which is an immediate deal breaker for me.
There are handful I’ve found that aren’t bad offering true month-to-month service. Give notice by phone or email by X day of the month and your membership ends at the end of that month. Miss that date? You only have one more month beyond that then.
For years Planet Fitness had a good deal they’d only run for a couple of days a year where you could prepay for the entire year for $99 (or later $120). You didn’t give them your bank info, no “credit card on file”. You could literally hand them the cash and 365 days from that day your membership would expire with zero action on our part. That was the best membership deal I’ve seen yet. I don’t know if they still do that.
In the meantime, one could always pay with a prepaid card and then just never add funds when you decide to quit. Then just “return to sender” any mail they try to send you.
If you’re using your real name I would imagine they’d send the debt to collections which would cost you even more when your credit score tanks and you try to buy a car or house.
I mean, yea, I don’t personally like the guy, but what a shit take, no observation upon the how’s/why’s of what he’s doing, just an insult.
Did you not read the article before responding? Its right in the first sentence:
“Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday said the electric vehicle maker will hold a shareholder vote to transfer the company’s state of incorporation to Texas, after publicly lashing out at Delaware—where the company is currently incorporated—over a court decision that voided the billionaire’s massive $50.9 billion pay package.”
The How’s and Why’s is because Tesla is incorporated in Delaware, a state famously favorable to businesses, and he lost a court ruling that is going to affect his wealth. There’s no changing that ruling, but moving would mean different but not better legal challenges going to Texas.
Further, he’s claiming he’s making this move because of a Twitter poll! Twitter has become extremely polarized since Musk’s purchase has become more of an echo chamber of “yes men” gravitating to Musk’s extreme positions. So he has a biased audience and putting it to a vote seemingly to try and add legitimacy to the decision. That is either deceitful because he knows they’re “yes men” or terrifyingly out-of-touch that he doesn’t know they’re “yes men” affirming his decisions because he’s asking for affirmation.
This is a massive failure either transparency or of self-awareness. Someone with Musk’s wealth and influence should do much much better than that.
I have mild reflux, but know what triggers it after what time of day and can make easy diet adjustments to avoid those triggers too late before bed. For whatever reason, I never considered looking at the alkaline level of the foods I eat. In just doing so now, I see a whole bunch of my regular diet. Have I been unconscious choosing these to mitigate my reflux? I mean, I seek out these foods (that I now know are alkaline) because I like them, but do I like them more than just for their taste?
