  • SEO is wrong - it’s like an arms race where the shittiest party spending the most wins and every one else needs to play by the rules to even exist.

The world would be better off if noone did it in the first place and search engines could just do the job they intended to do.

Google totally went to shit in the last years with their first page often full of websites great at SEO but horrible in whatever you were actually looking for.

Meanwhile the little ultra-specific forum that had a thread years ago about your specific search and no money for SEO is somewhere on page 5 while websites just repeating the search phrase over and over with no answer in sight are at the top.

That whole industry can cease to exist from one day to the next and nothing of value would be lost - if anything value would be gained for the average person

  • You know how many people in Germany that weren’t died because of the bombings?

If your government starts a war you have to pay the price.

Why is noone calling Hamas to surrender?

Sure Israel is definitely able to be more careful and their right wing ministers are only adding fuel - but that doesn’t really change their right to defend themselves (and Hamas is still attacking them each day)

That whole situation is a total clusterfuck and I really wish Israel would get rid of netanyahu and vote for someone that’s interested in a long term solution that’s including Palestine.

  • Steam is just perfect at keeping the gamers behind them as they are only assholes behind doors to the Devs on their platform.

30% is an absurd cut for a store that has such a monopoly that if you don’t release there your game is pretty much cancelled even if you release at your own store without DRM and with additional goodies (Looking at GOG and The Witcher - they released the Gwent standalone like a year later on steam because it didn’t sell at all on GOG and then it apparently outsold the GOG version without a week)

People are just too lazy and Steam is keeping them happy enough to not bother looking another way.

Epic isn’t a good guy in any case but the exclusive deals on AAA Games they do is probably the only way to get someone to buy the game there instead of Steam

  • Yeah

Israel had every right to defend themselves against the Hamas but what he and his far right ministers are doing and saying is making it really hard to support them and believe that it’s really only an attempt to eradicate Hamas and not also about expanding Israel as they do in the Westbank for years.

They are really making it almost impossible to support the legitimate cause of rescuing hostages and security their population from Hamas and are actively fuelling antisemitism through the anti-zionism they provoke

  • It’s not about security through obscurity but “if a measurement becomes a goal then it ceases to be a good measurement” - so keeping the measurements hidden in order to make it harder for them to become a goal is a decent way to go on about it.

How would you measure “without ads”? That would just be the same cat and mouse game that adblockers have to deal with for decades.

I’m not sure it’s possible to find a good completely open source solution that’s not either giving bad results by down rating good results for the wrong reasons or that’s open to misuse by SEO.

That might work if it’s a small project where noone cares about fixing the results but if something like that becomes mainstream it’s going to happen

  • How are you supposed to self-host a web crawler and indexer without getting a giant server bill?

Having this service at least slightly centralised makes sense ressource-wise - but assuming crawling and indexing is free is just foolish. I’d choose something like kagi but I guess many people will rather cheap out and go for the next free service not realising that that company has to make money another way to make up for the high cost of running a search engine
