I hitched my horse to just what I consider the basics–zip and unzip–and that has made it easy for me. But I’ve been stuck on those.

Extract anything:

tar xf <archive_file>

Create a tbz2 archive:

tar cjf <archive_file.tbz2> <stuff to put in it>

(And tossing in a -v is pretty universal, if that’s your thing.)

Some day, instead of commenting on a reddit Lemmy post, I think I’ll Google how to tell it to use .xz.

I wondered how this related to Alan Turing’s now-famous work cracking Enigma. TIL.

Alan Turing’s use of probability in cryptanalysis (see Banburismus) contributed to its design. It has sometimes been erroneously stated that Turing designed Colossus to aid the cryptanalysis of the Enigma. (Turing’s machine that helped decode Enigma was the electromechanical Bombe, not Colossus.)

It’s not just a sig on the image, but on metadata as well. Harder to fake time + place if they implement it thoroughly. (I.e., they would have to make it only trust GPS and verify against an internal clock, I suppose, and not allow updating time and location manually.)

I put a Ubiquiti long-range Wifi 6 AP on my ceiling, fed with a Dream Machine Pro SE. Google Fiber just kept saying, “You know, we could ‘upgrade’ you to our mesh stuff for free!” Ha, no thanks.

Btw, this is not an endorsement of Google Fiber. I just cancelled it. They can’t or won’t handle chronic infrastructure issues. Multiple outages a day, every day (as confirmed by their app) for weeks to months, and they still wouldn’t even acknowledge that there was a chronic problem, much less tell me any status of a permanent resolution. That service is total trash.

I always crimp my own, including using slide-on/slide-off hoods. That way I can back the hood off before plugging it into the port, which keeps it easy to disconnect, and I can slide it back on before pulling it through a tight spot.

My initial perception was focusing on the fact that that’s not abandoning it. That’s keeping one foot in the door, just in case.

I suspect many of them have never heard of it, either. It was default software on some bloatware device I had, either a Samsung phone or tablet or a Lenovo laptop, maybe. I expect plenty of people just accepted that it was there in front of their face and must just be “the news on the Internet”.
