Their way or no way
The one Apple product I still own is an iPad and I run into this constantly.
Support for network shares in the files app is barely functional at best (“Just use iCloud!”)
Mouse support is still super limited (“Just use touch!”)
You can’t install applications from anywhere but the appstore (“sECuRIty”)
You can’t install a proper browser or browser extensions (I don’t know even know what Apple’s excuse for this one would be)
You can’t disable or modify window tiling (“It’s just like an iPhone, because fuck multitasking!”)
Apple sells the iPad as a computer replacement, but basically all its capable of is watching Netflix or basic note-taking. The longer I use this thing the more I want to buy some x86 tablet that I can just install Linux on instead.
Craigslist in my area is at least 90% spam, FB Marketplace is also not super active. OfferUp is pretty popular though.
It’s insane to me that this is a hill Sony is willing to die on. So much goodwill to throw away just to collect a bit more data on users.
Just remember, if they’re willing to enforce this nonsense, you can be sure that there will be more nonsense to come. “Sorry everyone, Sony decided we need lootboxes! But our team is on the side of the players!”
I hate modern AAA games, I’m gonna go try out that new Stardew Valley update.
That’s one thing I especially like about Flatpaks on the Linux side. Everything’s in ~/.var.
Ah, just remembered it. Last unknown one is FreeTube.
MPV (Video player), Aurora Store (Google Play frontend). The last one looks familiar but I can’t quite place it.

Yep. To expand on this if people still want to use social media, here’s what helped me. The constant doom scrolling is unhealthy and unhelpful.
Block or mute news/doomsday communities/people on social media. Link aggregators and algorithm-driven social media just sucks for news across the board. Use Lemmy (or Reddit, etc) for memes, interesting discussions, cool pictures, whatever, but not news.
Collect a list of news sources you trust and add them to an RSS reader. Ideally in a separate folder from other feeds so you can easily filter them out when you aren’t interested in world news. You only get one “post” per article, rather than seeing the same “everything sucks now” article reposted to 20 different communities, and it’s buried in good ol’ boring news. Everything is less exciting in this format, it’s great.
That Bad Omens album is so good. I really need to listen to more Sleep Token too.
There are so many, if I had to limit myself to just a few highlights though:
Starset - Horizons
The Glitch Mob - Revisions
Skrillex - Quest for Fire
Northlane - Obsidian, Alien
Noisia - Closer
Erra - Erra
Polaris - Fatalism, The Death of Me
The Chemical Brothers - For that beautiful feeling
Justin Hawkes - Existential
Poppy - I Disagree
Porter Robinson - Nurture
Muzz - The Promised Land
HEALTH - Rat Wars
There’s just so much good music out there, especially recently.
I like to host as many services as possible and I’m fine with it being a second job at times since this is my main hobby, but I actually agree with you on your examples. The three things I won’t self-host are:
Emails - I am not willing to put in the effort on this. Plus, my ISP blocks those ports so I’d already be into using a VPS even if I wanted to host this. I’d rather just pay someone else, like Proton.
Password manager - I actually did self-host Bitwarden for a long time, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided to take the pay someone else approach here too. I’m pretty sure I’m doing everything correctly, but I’m not a security expert. I’d rather be 100% sure my passwords are in safe hands rather than be 95% sure that I’m doing everything right on this one.
Lemmy - I’ve heard about (luckily never seen) CSAM attacks on Lemmy/Kbin and will not risk that kind of content being downloaded because I’m federated with an instance dealing with those attacks. I’m happy to throw a couple bucks at lemmy.world’s Patreon and let them handle that.
I don’t play any Switch games and have never used Yuzu, but I just started donating to their Patreon. Hopefully they can afford to go to court over this. Nintendo can pound sand.
AM4 has been around for so long and is owned by so many people, there’s still a big market for those who want to upgrade without replacing their motherboard and RAM at the same time.
Disclaimer: I am not an electrical engineer, I am just an idiot on the internet.
I think this would be fine if it’s just a matter of discharging static electricity. If static is building up on your body, touching the car frame will redistribute that energy across both yourself and the car frame. By that point, there’s not enough potential energy in your body to damage whatever electronics you’re working on.
Also, if you happen to be working on computers, they’re pretty damn resistant to static shocks. Better safe than sorry of course, but it’s hard to kill a computer with static. ElectroBoom and LTT made a pretty good video about that a while back.
Ever since they started the Epic/Uplay exclusivity stuff, it’s made it easier than ever to avoid buying their games.
Dor Askayo is joining the team to continue their work on variable refresh rate (vrr) support in Mutter
Hell yeah, hopefully this makes it in time for Gnome 46.
Traveling at high speeds just takes a lot of power regardless of fuel, but ICE cars are so inefficient in city driving it makes highways look good in comparison. 25-50mph might be more efficient, but every time you brake that kinetic energy is turned into waste heat, totally negating the benefit of driving slower.
EVs on the other hand have regenerative braking systems. Rather than using friction to slow the car down, they just use the motors by applying resistance to the wheels. The kinetic energy is used to charge the battery while slowing the car down. You get the benefit of slower speeds without much braking loss, so this is where EVs shine.
I hate Tesla and especially the Cybertruck as much as the next guy, but this was a highway test and that sounds like a completely normal result.
I own a Bolt EV which is rated for 259 miles of range. On the highway, that’s more like ~220. That sounds bad, but the other side of it is that I get ~300 miles of range during my normal work commutes through the city. This is just how EVs are, the estimated range is based on a mixed test. EVs are backwards compared to ICE, you’ll get ~20% less range than the EPA estimate driving highway speeds and ~20% more doing purely city driving.
I’m being hyperbolic with that last part, but there’s so much basic computer stuff that the iPad can’t do that it feels like Apple only expects this to be a device to watch Netflix on.
I want to install VS Code (or a comparable IDE) and run/debug some Python scripts, can’t do it.
I want to open a terminal and use basic utilities like ssh, curl, tar, yt-dlp, rclone, rsync, etc, can’t do it. I literally need to install a separate app that lets me ssh into a Linux box so I can do basic stuff there. I’m SOL if I need to work with any data on the iPad’s file system though.
I want to install Godot and continue playing around with game development on the go, can’t do it.
I want to install Steam and play some indie games, can’t do it.
Procreate is pretty good, but I’d rather use Krita.
Which means despite the fact that I want to use it for more, all I do with my iPad Pro (“Pro,” lmao) is watch movies and TV from my Jellyfin server, occasionally draw if I don’t feel like sitting at my desk with a proper Wacom/Krita setup, and write my shopping list.
