That’s a very dangerous way of twisting someone’s words, especially on a subject this emotionally charged.

Edit: adding to add that contrary to the title here, they are not talking about Editing pictures to be nudes, but generating them. Don’t get me wrong, I have no interest in seeing either, and the day they’re paying themselves is not doing them any favours. But someone is clearly out for character assassination here.

Nevermind, it was about altering the photos of a 15 year old girl into nudes. And while it technically/physically may not be child abuse, for the victim it might as well be. That’s indefensible - I’m out.

Yeah, that’s why I think it’s debatable. It’s a lot easier to make those decisions on traffic coming from a known vpn ip, versus all vps providers in the world - many of which have corporate uses.

On the other hand - if you’re smart enough to set up a vpn, you’ll also be smart enough to set up ad blocking, so the point is kinda moot anyway. Plus you’ll be a lot less likely to have your traffic logged opposed to a service vpn.

That’s debatable. In my estimation, by using a “service vpn” you’re giving advertisers some other kind of demographic information, namely that you’re the kind of person that pays for a vpn.

Obligatory this is why you shouldn’t use a free/cheap vpn.

Situation 1: Person A annoys person B. Person B “mutes” person A. Person A rants at Person B, gets no reply, and moves on.

Situation 2: Person A annoys person B. Person B “blocks” person A. Person A notices Person B has blocked them, logs on to an alt account, and annoys them from there.

One of these methods defuses harassment, the other has a far higher risk of escalating it.

I’m curious about what makes people think the second method would work better.

They’re not wrong. On multiple occasions the devs have acted like assholes, this one as well. Especially the part where they initially didn’t think GDPR would apply because they aren’t a commercial entity (paraphrasing) is comically depressing.

Having said that, I won’t be cancelling my donations anytime soon. Assholes though they might be, I still want to pay back to the Lemmy community, and I can’t think of a better way than this.

Wouldn’t the attacker have to be on the same network as the resolver for this to work? Or could it be triggered by a “dirty hostname”? Because in the former case, most home networks would not be at much risk.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Depending on where you are in the world, there dozens of laws that might interfere. Ranging from publicity rights to slander, especially if the images are photorealistic (enough).
