Sure you could technically go into a complex explanation using physics as to why it’s a bad idea, but why?

The super duper shitty thing is that they could have canceled it by opening the Run dialog box and typing “shutdown -a”, so it’s not even like canceling wasn’t an option. M$ just decided to be dicks about it

It might be a bit overboard, but I have a Redmine instance running on my NAS that can likely do everything you want. Some out if the box, some with plugins. It’s pretty nice. If you don’t want to worry about installing it you can download a complete installer from Bitnami.

Researching anything that happened on the internet right now in the future is going to be absolute hell considering how much useful user information and interactions are “locked” behind Discord. Is there a term for something worse than link rot? With link rot it’s a case of a known unknown. With information on Discord it’s an unknown unknown.

There are still base features of BB10 that are not native on iOS or Android (I have the former for work and the latter for my personal). It probably sounds trivial, but I liked being able to have the phone automatically switch sound profiles bases on stuff in the calendar. Never had to remember to switch my phone to vibrate when going from the factory floor to a meeting.

Why pay? I think the answer is pretty easy. If one doesn’t want to self host. Running any kind of web based service costs the person running it money. Google obviously makes money off of a user doing searches via adds and data collection. I would actually have no issue paying for certain Google services if it meant that as a paying customer they would not double dip and try and profit off the data they are collecting on me.

This is all coming from a person who has a server rack in my basement and multiple PCs scattered throughout my home, so I am no stranger to self hosting.

Capital One has that capability built in. I have dedicated credit card numbers for just about every service I use.

Tons. A special firmware I use for my 3D printer is supported through Discord. All questions and new firmware links are posted there. Even with Slack being “searchable”, unless I am mistaken, it’s not indexed by search engines, right? So when trying to figure something out I would need to search for webpages and then also search Slack right?

I was specifically referring to the forum like sections. The lack of indexing and internet archive means large swaths of knowledge, timelines, history, and even culture will become dust in the wind.

That shit is the most infuriating thing ever to me. It seems like so many technical discussions and communities are going to Discord now where that information is not indexed or preserved. How many issues have I had where the answer was sitting on a Discord server that will never appear in any general search result?

That’s where I am at as well. I would be more than happy to pay for YouTube Premium as I recognize it is not an insignificant undertaking, and I even think some of the algorithmic suggestions are good (though an option to turn them off maybe?). If I am paying for the service though then I think I should then become the customer, not the product, and should have some guarantees to that effect.

I’d also like to have a more clear idea of how much the service really costs. If it costs a lot to run, then just price it appropriately. Knock it off with this boil the frog bull shit and raising the cost every year or two.

Not all extensions though. I want to be able to use the User Agent switcher that I use on desktop and when I add that to the extension collection it causes none of the extensions to appear in Firefox mobile.

Yeah, I never said I thought it was tennable or that any system like I described has ever actually existed. Wishes and dreams, ya know?

What kinda bothers me is that I recognize that something like YouTube is expensive to run and just switching to an alternative isn’t super feasible. I would be more than happy to pay for a service like YouTube that I use everyday. HOWEVER, not with their bullshit double dipping. If I am paying a company like Google to use their services, I don’t think it’s unreasonable that their should be an expectation or mechanism where that means I am not just no longer served ads, but that all tracking and data collection about my account(s) are stopped.

That’s never going to happen though :/

Yeah Asus’ Zen UI does it as well, but they have text labels under all of the buttons that appear after taking a screenshot.

I’m not positive but I think the option “Add to Home Screen” is the same thing as the above user mentioned. That’s what I have in my menu options, I don’t have an “Install” option there.
