Photoshop has unmatched tools to get work done 15 to 30 times faster than Gimp. This does not apply to everything of course and in some niche stuff Gimp’s even faster. However what I use Photoshop for, such as removing unwanted distractions like trash cans, trash, overhead electric cables and such Gimp is like 30 years behind. It’s not realistic that someone would spend many minutes just selecting hair outline in Gimp.
Ultimately developing these tools has cost evil Adobe many millions of dollars. 1-3 extremely talented and enthusiastic programmers cannot compete with this. Then again in the near future we will either not need Photoshop anymore, or open source projects like Gimp or a more open minded fork could use Ai generated code to develop similar automated tools.

Celeste, Hollow Knight, Talos Principle, Hyper Light Drifter…
I just wish he lived a healthier life.
Many retro games are better. AA games were made with heart back then & that made it possible to make games that are incredible both in terms of artistry, grandeur and gameplay. Games like Baldur’s Gate 1-2, Chrono Cross etc are not possible in today’s climate.
On the other hand we have been handed indie games like Celeste and Hollow Knight, so I don’t know. Amazing games still exists, it’s just not really comparable.
, or you think every single person that age is a “vertical video crazy”.
Sounds about right to me ^
I think people that are very interested in TikTok largely overlap with the vertical video crazies :-)
I don’t think they care, they just want to siphon your data freely given.
That’s amazing. (and FF8 is best FF)
Mint is a huge community distribution and Nobara is one guy maintaining a gaming PC for himself and his father. He has done a lot of good for the community and is very smart, but I would never use his kernel, ever.
This is a really great read, but I’m less optimistic than he is.
Chrunchbang or Bunsen are exactly this, vanilla Debian with stuff set up with openbox. The vast majority of ppl don’t need anything more lightweight than this. (maybe conky should be removed, but that’s it.)
If the old PC in question is a small laptop, such as an EEEpc, then I would use vanilla Debian with i3, because I really would want tiling on that…
I think the gaming industry has not existed for long enough for this to be a thing. Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross are just as good today as they were 20-30 years ago, same for Baldur’s Gate or Jazz Jackrabbit.
One example comes to mind is Oddworld: New and Tasty. It’s fairly faithful to the original game, but at the same time the updated 3d rendered graphics failed to portray the same mysticism & gloominess. (and yes I have played Odyssey just recently on my retro PC) Not saying no one has pulled this off, but it’s like Resident Evil is the only one I can think of.
There are VERY FEW games where pop culture references need to be updated so much that this is worth it. It’s better to just make a new game with a completely new plot then.
It just occurred to me that Death Really (1995) would deserve to be talked about as well, it’s just an incredible little game.
I think Gothic 1 is much better. :p (it would totally deserve a spot in this conversation, but it’s a very highly regarded game )
You will die thousands of times, but until you reach your limit as a gamer it will never feel like banging your head against an unbreakable wall. Just moving around is so much fun in Celeste.
Celeste is the best of all time in its genre. i have put more than 100 hours in it and yet i’m still shit, but it’s just so gratifying to complete a harder screen…
My take is that on an Arch system I can install anything and I have btrfs snapshots to roll back forkups. I don’t need this added layer of complexity in its current form. If it offered proper and easily configurable sandboxing I would certainly think about it.
(Then again I have a Deb laptop and perhaps I will try this out for Pyradio)
I’ll just use invidious, it’s a bit of a chore to use, but it’s increasingly worth it.
