I’m not so sure. I’m interested in this thread because I had a recent issue like this. I barely use Instagram, hadn’t booted the app for a month or something, only have it to support my SO’s art account. Never comment/DM, just likes. Had a lengthy in person conversation about tattoos and the idea of getting them at current location. I didnt do any searches on my phone or any other device for that matter. Don’t have any tattoos, or ever look at that content on insta (only follow art and wildlife photography accounts). Booted up Instagram that day and was getting purely adverts for local tattoos studios on my feed. Checked my permissions, all disabled. The only explanation I have is that it’s somehow still listening. That can’t possibly be a coincidence.

  • I have encountered this “American social issues transplanted” hand waving a lot in Europe. For example, I know a lot of Swedes who say this about a bunch of casually racist stuff (proclaiming Sweden to be very anti-racist). Meanwhile up north you see a lot of Classic American cars which are often casually emblazoned with Confederate flags and even displayed in proximity to Nazi memorabilia. Down south you have a rising right-wing party support fuelled by fear of immigrants from Africa/Middle East (eg. The non-white ones).

I understand you’re trying to educate yourself and that’s great, don’t take this as dunking on you more, as I feel like you’re in the smart minority by trying to learn and reason. It just really bugs me when I hear people say it’s a US problem. A lot of Europe is holding a lot of racist views (and in a lot of cases, horrific colonial history) and then turn around to say things like “why are my football players kneeling, BLM is an American issue”.

  • Oh I totally get that. But where there’s mayo, there’s no need for butter. And if you slightly toast the bread first it will mostly hold off the sogginess. And it’s only really a problem with basic sliced bread, some nice crusty or dense grainy bread will often hold up anyway.

To me, it’s the equivalent of something like deep frying bacon. Probably still delicious but not really necessary.

I would like to get behind To’s, but it’s a bit too similar to toes. I like the idea of toes in my sandwiches less than butter.

  • My parents put butter on sandwiches that really don’t need it and it drives me mad. Looks like I’m in the minority.

Out of all of the sandwiches on that list, they all already have some moisture without the need for butter:

    • BLT – Bacon grease/tomato juice & lettuce is mostly water
    • Chicken salad – usually means slathered in mayo
    • Tuna mayonnaise – mayonnaise & tuna is usually wet to begin with
    • Fish finger –ketchup (maybe also mayonnaise), or just malt vinegar
    • Cheese and pickle – if dry, you were stingy with the pickle
    • Egg and cress – just a wet mess already
    • Coronation chicken – in its own curry/creamy/mayo sauce
    • Prawn mayonnaise – mayonnaise
    • Smoked salmon and cream cheese – cream cheese
    • Beef and horseradish – horseradish
