  • Nothing is stopping them from doing it, which is why when the cops get a report of someone pointing a gun at people they have no choice but to assume it’s real (unless it’s obviously shaped like a super soaker). If the person training their gun-shaped object on passersby points the gun at the cops they usually get shot because the cops aren’t willing to bet their life that it’s not some asshole who put orange acrylic paint on the tip of a real gun.

There are some hobbyists that paint their guns to look like a Nerf gun or a Nintendo gun controller. The general consensus is “it would be stupid to take this out anywhere other than the range”. This is much less common than the opposite: toy or pellet guns that look very realistic.

  • An IPO is an initial public offering. It is when shares of the company are being sold for the first time. This allows a company to (potentially) raise an enormous amount of money to expand their business.

When people buy and sell stocks or you see stock prices being reported on this is more or less a secondary market, people or investment firms trading stocks amongst themselves. The company doesn’t get any money when a stock trades hands in this fashion.

An IPO is different. The company is selling little pieces of ownership and the money from those sales go into their coffers. To raise the most funds the company wants to convince potential buyers that the company is valuable and is now or will soon be profitable (and will pay a dividend out for each share owned). This assessment of value (called valuation) is often complex and can take a long, long time.

Reddit’s recent effective shutdown of third party apps to force mobile users onto the Reddit mobile app was almost certainly an effort to get a better valuation. It shows potential buyers of shares that the content on Reddit can only be accessed on mobile devices via an app that the company would get the ad revenue from.

All the kerfuffle and shakeups at Reddit have been leading up to the big day, the IPO. The big news scoop is that that date has been set for March.

  • Relatively new parent here. I regret to inform you that your hypothesis is incorrect, at least for my kid. He’s still an infant, though and I don’t know if you include kids under 1 in “small children”.

My wife and I only use our phones to track his nap times, take a picture of him occasionally (once a week or so), and make phone calls. He is still magnetically attracted to them. If you leave one sitting on a surface he can reach he will go for it and start trying to get it to light up on the lock screen. This is especially frustrating for my wife and I as we intend to restrict screen time as much as possible through early childhood.

Even removing social pressures and constructs around phones they are little boxes with moving lights on one side that respond to your touch. That’s inherently interesting to children even before they can meaningfully interpret writing or abstract images.

  • Think of a guilty/not guilty plea as the defense declaring their stance rather than literally saying “I did this” or “I did not do this”. After all there are circumstances in which a person absolutely did the thing they’re accused of but are not actually guilty (self defense) or extenuating circumstances need to be considered (insanity plea).

Perjury requires that a person lied under oath in a specific, provable way. That’s why defense attorneys will sometimes have their client not take the stand or assert their fifth amendment rights in response to certain questions. Making the prosecution prove that the defendant did a thing is fine. Saying “I didn’t do thing X at all” and then having evidence being presented that you did is no bueno.

TL;DR: A not guilty plea basically says “prove it”. Perjury is lying about specifics and it can later be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that you lied about those details.
