In response to that…
We’re semi-rural (multi acre lots often with houses set almost at the back of lots), this was my first Halloween out here, I was following the kids with a car cause it was cold and snowy. But apparently the other parents in the neighborhood all hang out and set up a flatbed trailer with a fire pit, lawn chairs, and beer just being hauled around by a UTV. I need to learn how to make friends as an adult.
Mmmm Republicans giving us repression?
Don’t forget Louisiana… My wife’s favorite.
I startled my dogs laughing at that last bit.
Last time I dealt with Matlab much was like fifteen years ago when I was helping some people using it for quick interpretation of data. We just kept finding bugs that caused calculation errors (which they fixed pretty quickly TBF) and it was so much slower than any other general programming language we tried. It could be way better now, I wouldn’t know, I haven’t had call to use it since… A circuit simulation class?
In all reality it’s fine for what it does, just like every other language. It’s another tool in the box that’s most useful for a certain set of problems.
Matlab shouldn’t, in my opinion, be used to construct a GUI, or generally be used for any sort of production code. Perfectly fine as a research tool though.
But I digress, my overall point is a meaningless semantic joke. The only people who will get bent out of shape about splitting hairs between “scripting” and “programming” are all people who belong in this community.
Oh it shouldn’t, seeing as how it’s a scripting language and not actually for programming lol
Just pull the trigger, we both know how this ends.
Above everything, lack of curiosity. If someone is uncurious, it’s a big red flag to me.
It would be a crying shame if someone were to figure out a way to force those e ink displays to refresh fast enough that it kills the batteries on those things…
I’ve still got my old Anova, Bluetooth one. I don’t even use the app ever, I can set it up with the wheel and buttons. Still works great after like 5+ years. That said, I won’t be recommending them to anyone going forward.
As far as the local control goes, you can keep it from phoning home and it will still work. I don’t believe that the Shelly firmware is open source, but they allow you to upload custom firmware that is.
Because you can cut them off from the outside world I don’t believe it is doing the same kind of data collection externally unless you allow it to.
The new “mini” versions of their gear is harder to customize apparently but still possible, they still sell the larger versions though too that are easy to modify.
I agree that other protocols are better, but I’ve found that zwave tends to be more stable and reliable than zigbee. And both are better than Wi-Fi. But Wi-Fi is the easiest to onboard for a beginner.
Shelly is pretty good for smart home stuff.
I care a lot about local control, but they even have some cloud stuff if you’re into that sort of thing.
Zooz is one of my favorites for zwave gear.
Generally speaking I do things myself because it’s cheaper, in that it lets me allocate cash in higher quality versions of things than I would otherwise be able to afford. I grew up pretty poor and that was how my family did things. Car breaks, that’s why you buy a Chilton’s. Appliance isn’t working? You can always order the part for a tenth of what it costs to have the appliance guy tell you what’s wrong. AC quit working? Those capacitors are super easy to replace and only cost $7.
Now I could pay people to do more things for me, but it’s only under certain circumstances.
Sometimes it just boils down to something my Dad told me underneath a car (or a house maybe) like 30 years ago: “Nobody is gonna care about your shit more than you do.”
I try to not buy any Wi-Fi smart home devices anymore. I try to stick to zwave or zigbee, zwave I have better luck with generally. I even left my nest thermostat at my old house and installed a 10+ year old zwave thermostat at the new one. Way happier. I’m not relying on googles API to be stable anymore for home assistant interaction.
Alas, I cannot grow hair on the top of my head, so I must grow it on the bottom.
We no longer have humor, it’s been beaten out of us by code reviews and merge conflicts.
