Summary
TikTok’s request to pause a pending ban and January 19th sale deadline was denied by a federal appeals court.
The court upheld the constitutionality of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, citing national security concerns.
TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has until January 19th to sell or face a ban.
Just need to now pass and implement a Protecting Americans from Domestic Adversary Controlled Applications Act with adversary defined as all the data stealing, data selling, shareholder value maximizing, endless increasing profit, grotesquely capitalistic, corporations.
Platform is kill. Most of the users are quite casual and not technically inclined and will simply give up if they can’t reinstall the application from the store.
Maybe they should donate to trump’s inauguration fund. That seems to gain his favor.
Nah there are too many left radicalizing videos on the platform for Trump to ever approve. (Ignore the overwhelming torrent of Trumpets and MAGAtts on the app - they don’t matter to him)
This all seems so pointless while sites like X thrive.
And now I’m realizing Musk will ensure it does get banned so he can slurp everyone up into his own foreign interference cesspool.
Hopefully they all go to BlueSky instead.
Wdym pointless? That is the point. The other big social media companies and their leaders can be easily influenced by US politicians while TikTok so far couldnt. Thats why it is being banned.
TikTok users are not going to use those platforms unless they have endless scroll videos. On top of that the rest of the world is not going to stop using TikTok unless it gets banned in their country. On top of that people with TikTok on their phone already are not going to stop using it unless there’s some forced removal process.
Inability to reinstall when a phone is broken or replaced will send it on a slow death spiral if all they do is remove it from the stores. Or in Android’s case I guess this could drive users into adopting other app stores.
I think they will literally delete the app from our phones if they have that capability.
Arent they going to be blocked by ISPs?
My understanding from following the issue is they are just going to be removed from app stores. Desktop use isn’t much and an ISP block would be thwarted by a VPN which are cheap and ubiquitous.
That said, take my words with a grain of salt. I’m not a primary source.
Even if they get removed from app stores unless IOS is restricting installation or android is disabling APKs you can just install it from a third party.
You have to disable Play Protect it now blocks unknown apks on android 15 and higher most users will give up only tech inclined users will most likely pursue that cource.
What about developer mode? Sideload the apps?
TikTok users aren’t going to Bluesky, they’ll go to IG. Perhaps Reels, but I doubt it
X is loosing users to Bluesky, but much more slowly than right after the election. Engagement is much higher per follower there and everyone I’ve seen has been happy to move but I also think it’s about a critical mass of big accounts moving over and bringing their followers. A lot of left wing journalists are there. A lot of news has broken there before X, but I actually learned about Mangione’s arrest here on Lemmy first.
I think Bluesky has potential, I joined after the election when it was gaining attention (deleted my Twitter account long ago) and it was around 18M users. It gained another 3 million rapid fire, but now I think it just hit 24 or 25M. So the X-odus could use another kick in the pants.
I don’t necessarily like huge social networks, but I’m voting for it to kill X.
I’d like all of these data harvesting scumbags to get a kick where the sun don’t shine.
I’m not gonna boo one getting it because another hasn’t yet. I’m gonna cheer and hope for another.
Granted that’s not likely under the guy who wants to separate families and give billionaires tax cuts.
There’s that “free market” again.
China doesn’t have a free market and does not allow US-based social media in the country. Why should the US allow China to operate in the US without reciprocity?
Getting to the spot to shut it off. I thought this all would work out, one way or another. Now, I’m starting to think maybe it won’t
They’ll move it out of the US, either shore up web app access or deliver applications through other means. That does leave a lot of iOS users in the dark though
That doesn’t really matter. They can still block it from the US very easily.
There’s nothing very easy about blocking it. Unlimited funding, unlimited addressing, unlimited posting opportunities. In the end they’d have to block every company willing to let them run a proxy.
There are master routers at 5 Inter Exchange Points in the US. Block the Tik tok domain in those 5 routers and it’s done.
You think that five “routers” in the US can block a domain name?
Do you think that they have to use a domain name?
Do you think that they have to use static IP addresses or even ranges?
Do you think they can’t implement tor or I2P inside their app?
You don’t understand the network. You think it’s your ISP. It’s not. Now we can go into fundamentals, but perhaps it would be easier to ask yourself how China can lock out web sites, which it does, and why the US would be any different. All this would take is a court order to AT&T.
Nah pal, I fully understand the internet. I was around for it to be made, not right at the beginning but certainly before any of the actual public was using it. I’ve been in IT the whole time.
I fully understand how DNS and BGP work. I was even around for EGP, But I have a lot less knowledge about it.
China is designed architecturally with a state-run filter with packet inspection at every egress point. China has requirements that every company in their borders provide them access control. If any company outside of China wishes to host anything in China they have to partner with the Chinese company that is already satisfied these positions and host with that company. They can do all of this because they are an authoritarian regime designed from the ground up to do so.
You have absolutely no idea of the difference in scope of which you’re insinuating.
Seeing the Tik Tok was not registered in the US It can’t be ICEd easily.
You could issue court orders for each ISP to block that domain, At which point they could stand up 50 more.
I’ll ask you again, do you think they need to use a domain name for their app?
At the very least it’s ingress is in Amazon so you could have Amazon shut them down, I can’t imagine that they would not have a geo-responsible disaster recovery plan already good to go.
How is AT&T going to stop you from using an SSL DNS server outside the country? How is AT&T going to stop you from making direct SSL connections to a gigantic pool of dynamic IP addresses?
Do you think that AT&T can handle deep packet inspection on the whole network level? How large would a server farm need to be? How much do you think that would cost for them, how much do you think it would cost for Comcast, Verizon, level3, Cogent? How many years do you think it would take them to comply with that?
