Meanwhile, the European Parliament is threatening to take the European Commission to court for its decision linked to the disbursement of €10bn cohesion funds for Hungary in December.
With the support of the Socialists & Democrats, the centre-right European People’s Party, liberal Renew Europe, the Greens and The Left, MEPs are expected to approve a resolution on Thursday calling for a parliamentary inquiry into the legality of the commission’s decision and urging the EU council to strip Hungary’s voting rights [Ed: article 7 procedure].
Hungary doubles down on Ukraine aid demands
The majority of EU member states are against deciding the issue on a year-to-year basis as they believe it would deny Ukraine long-term planning ability and would effectively give Budapest the option of an ‘annual veto’.
Budapest has also made an unrelated demand about the bloc’s COVID-19 recovery funds (RRF).
Yeah the question is whether being " politically blackmailed " by Hungary’s veto powerabuse on a regular basis, and EU giving in (partly) to their demands, is the correct course of action. It doesn’t sit right by me at all.
The support for invoking article 7 procedure is growing.
