East Asian living in the UK since 2012. I don’t think there was too much of a culture shock on my move to the UK. We were already quite exposed to western culture through media.
What caught me off guard was when I first returned to my home country in 2015. I was at an airport asking for directions from an airport staff member, and was given nothing more than a “there” and an outstretched hand. They never stopped to look up from their phone throughout the exchange. I think that moment really cemented the large amount of pleasantries / fluff expected in conversation back here in the UK.
