I’m not convinced Threads is actually going to federate. They’ve had months to do it, and it’s not like the parent company lacks resources. What it might lack is a business case for federation or serious consequences for not keeping its promises.
I’m almost in agreement, I’m increasingly skeptical with how long it’s taking.
Threads seems like it was supposed to be in development for another several months. I bet they decided to launch much earlier than they ought to have in order to capture the outgoing Twitter crowd.
Huge doubt. Mastodon only has 1.6 million active people source, it’s practically a rounding error compared to all of Meta’s properties.
Threads had ~65x as many people sign up in a month, and even though many dropped off, Threads is on track (as of Sept) to reach 23.7 million users. source.
The fediverse is certainly a thing that needs to grow but I think it’s real-world impact right now is greatly exaggerated.

Yeah the fediverse’s real-world impact is definitely miniscule currently, but I can’t seem to trust even a tiny bit in Meta to not pull the EEE plug. I understand your opinion tho.

I just figure if Threads federates, it means one less reason for people to say “well Mastodon has nobody on it” because they can just add people on Threads. I think more people would leave Threads for Mastodon than Mastodon for Threads.

Let’s say… a hair over 1/3rd of my IRL friends are active on it because of the Twitter exodus. A much smaller chunk went to Bluesky. And a lot just don’t do much outside of group chats.
There is a 0.00% chance the friends on Threads will ever care to sign up for Mastodon because most of their friends aren’t on it and I don’t blame them. It’d be one more account to maintain for little value.
This is why this insanely exaggerated fear of Threads makes no sense to me. It’s easy to get tech-y people into Mastodon but that’s not everyone’s social circle. Most people genuinely do not care about federation. They just want a place to follow friends and people they like.

Threads is significantly active with mainstream accounts posting. There is a slim chance they’re going to Mastodon.
Threads is on estimated to have ~23m active users by end of year. That’s literally 14x more people than Mastodon right now.
Comparatively, Lemmy only has like 35k active users but seems sufficiently active.
