It doesnt. Neither does silver, unless they are fake/alloys. It’s a metaphor about how wealth is fleeting and that material wealth is not true wealth.
Silver does still tarnish when it exposed to atmospheric sulfur though.
If your gold rusts away before your eyes, God is really angry with you.
